How Oil Skimming Can Enhance Environmental Responsibility
In a review of manufacturing facilities that produce oily wastes, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
recently found oil skimming to be an effective and environmentally friendly option for removing oil from
wastewater. As noted by the EPA, skimming, along with water conservation, reduces pollution and provides an
effective means of removing oil from wastewater.
In today’s society, environmental responsibility must be a top priority for companies in nearly any industry,
manufacturing included. At Oil Skimmers, Inc., one of our key objectives is to help our customers meet
desired and required environmental responsibility needs through high quality, customized oil skimming
solutions.
Specifically, with our tube-type oil skimmers in place, customers can:
- Save on overall water consumption and usage as wastewater can often be reused following oil removal.
- Reduce or eliminate the need to use water-treatment chemicals.
- Enhance the ability to reuse and/or recycle oil.
- Help to address environmental concerns regarding oil-related contaminations.
- Better meet established environmental standards and regulations, such as reducing the discharge of
conventional pollutants (EPA) in wastewater as well as other industry-specific regulations.
How’d they do it?
The following success stories shed some light on how one chemical industry company and one oil and gas
industry company were able to use tube-type oil skimmers to help meet wastewater requirements.
Polyvinyl chloride resins plant success story
Prior to installing an oil skimmer, a polyvinyl chloride resins plant that was discharging oil used in the
facility’s polymerization process into its wastewater found it was frequently exceeding state limits for
discharged oil. Soon, the company was faced with costly fines of up to $53,000 per day. After installing the
skimmer, the company was able to completely remove the oil from the wastewater – not only avoiding
the fines, but helping achieve environmental responsibility at the same time.
Petroleum distributor success story
A petroleum specialty products distributor was at a crossroads when it learned it needed to comply with state
oil/wastewater requirements or lose its operating permits and be forced to shut down. Turning to an oil
skimmer to help meet state guidelines and avoid costly penalties, the company was able to pass state
compliance thresholds each month, beginning with its very first test – and, reduce the amount of oil
in its wastewater by approximately 99 percent.
In addition to enhancing environmental responsibility, oil skimming technology can also help companies reduce
costs, generate new revenue, provide a safer work environment and streamline operations.
